In late summer on Main Street, the Art Fair in Midland, Michigan draws a cross-section of the state — craftspeople with decades in their hands, vendors still setting up at dawn, livestock judges who have driven three hours for a single ribbon. I walked the whole length of it twice, looking for the faces that settled into their own light rather than performing for the camera. Two of those faces became this chapter.
